Bothnian Coastal Tourism

Bothnian Coastal Tourism is a three-year Interreg Aurora project in which organisations along the Swedish and Finnish coasts of the Gulf of Bothnia are working together to develop the area as a shared international destination.

The project builds on the work carried out within Bothnian Coastal Route and takes the next step from development and concepts to practical implementation, business development and marketing.

The project aims to:
  • strengthen the export readiness and international competitiveness of tourism businesses through initiatives in areas such as product development, packaging, pricing, digitalisation, AI, sustainability and international sales.
  • create a stronger shared story and increase the international visibility of destinations along the Swedish and Finnish coasts.
  • develop international markets, with Finland, the Netherlands and Germany among the key target markets, and create more reasons for international visitors to discover the coastal region.
  • create better opportunities for journeys that allow visitors to combine several destinations and experiences on both the Swedish and Finnish sides of the Gulf of Bothnia.
  • contribute to increased international tourism throughout a larger part of the year and strengthen the conditions for more sustainable year-round tourism.

The High Coast's role in the project
For the High Coast, the project provides an opportunity, together with Sundsvall, to connect Västernorrland to a larger international coastal region stretching north along the Swedish coast and across to Finland.

Through this collaboration, we can strengthen tourism businesses' ability to reach international visitors, develop attractive and export-ready experiences, and create more reasons for visitors to discover several destinations during the same trip.

Höga Kusten Destinationsutveckling is a project partner and is also responsible for Sundsvall's participation in the project. Kvarken Council is the Lead Partner. Other partners are located in destinations including Umeå, Luleå, Vaasa, Kalajoki and Oulu. Sundsvall and Kristinestad are also represented in the project.
